Dear Dr. Mount. I have been following you for years! This is the very first time I have ever left a comment for anyone. I almost always agree with your point of view and perspective. However, I am compelled to speak up on this occasion. I feel your view of the corona virus is somewhat misguided. I am a nurse anesthetist in Ohio and we are totally slammed with critically Ill corona virus patients. Many areas in Ohio are. You have repeated frequently that ERs are empty, parking lots are empty. In all the hospitals in my area, corona virus patients bypass the ER totally and go directly to an ICU area. So, ER s are mostly empty. Parking lots are empty because no one is allowed in the hospital with the patients. No visitation. Hospitals are on total lock down. I wish I could take you to work with me to show you how horrible it is. At our hospital, we only have 4 anesthesia providers. One of them was just called up by the military with only 12 hours notice. This leaves three of us to cover 24/7. We are now staying at the hospital either 96 or 120 hours a week. In addition, we still have to go in on the days we aren't sleeping at the hospital. The care of these patients is very labor intensive! Hospitals aren't even admitting patients until they are at the critical level because there just aren't enough beds or staff to care for them. This virus is easily aerosolized and highly contagious. These patients are presenting with very advanced symptoms and therefore are carrying a much higher viral load. It is challenging just to suit up in the proper protective gear. N95 mask, gown, shoe covers, head cover, full PAPR ventilation suit, 4 pairs of gloves; 2 of which are surgical gloves. Try wearing all that for 6 hours straight because you have to intubate patient after patient, start an arterial line, start a central line and place them in prone position, on their bellies, to enable them to ventilate appropriately with this virus. This means you are in the room 2.5 to 3 hours with each patient. It takes 3 people to do this. 6 people to properly turn these patients. All who have to put on the same protective gear. Many facilities are maxed out on vent usage. We are preparing to double up patients on the ventilators. Our colleague that just left with the military is helping in New York/New Jersey. They are placing 3 patients at a time on one ventilator. None of this is common practice. While I am fighting for these patients, my sister is at a larger hospital critically Ill with the corona virus while others are fighting to give her a chance to make it. Remember NO visitation, so I can't even see her. Please, it is tragic. You are insulting all of us on the front lines in this. We are putting our own lives on the line everyday. Regardless of the origin of the virus or the motives of the elite/politicians, it doesn't change the circumstances on the front line. Life changing, unforgettable the tragedy we are witnessing.
